Not that anyone really wants me to go super deep into my sleep patterns but it could actually be helpful for some. After wearing my Oura ring for over 6 months I have figured out the following

  1. The total hours of sleep is not as important as the quality: I usually get a BETTER sleep when I go to bed at my usual time and get up at my regular time of 4:30 am. My body has gotten so accustomed to this that after 4:30 my body may be asleep but my mind has woken up. Sometimes I will get REM sleep after that time but half the time I get worthless “awake” sleep where I don’t remember that period but my watch tells me body metrics are the same as if I were up. Worthless
  2. Routine is everything. If I am within 15 minutes of my normal to be and get up time a 7 hour sleep is good enough to cover my exercise if I run 7 miles. I need 7.5 if I get 10-12 and I need 8 if I run 15+. Of course I walk another 10 miles at work but don’t wear my ring during the day so it doesn’t know.
  3. My heart rate rises at 3 am if I am in good recovery. If it continues to drop all the way until I wake up I am not ready for a hard day
  4. Getting a good dose of light (during run) it sets my clock for a good sleep that night. The night after I sleep in is my worst night sleep.
  5. Magnesium threonate works well for winding down for a good sleep but the dreams come heavy so I don’t use it anymore. This year since not taking it I have had maybe 3 dreams that I can remember in 6 months. With threonate it was half the nights that I had “is this real” dreams
  6. I don’t wear it every night now. It’s good to just sleep and not worry about how it went. It’s only data, I’m not obsessed with it but I do like to compare its feedback to how I think I slept
  7. Finally, sleep is singularly the most important part of your mental and physical health. Get good and you’ll be good
