StackPath, a provider of secured Internet services including CDN, WAF and DDoS mitigation built “at the cloud’s edge”, has announced the acquisition of Server Density – a provider of proactive infrastructure monitoring for cloud, servers, and websites.

Founded by SoftLayer founder Lance Crosby, StackPath’s services would enable developers at organizations of any size to build protection and performance into any cloud-based solution – from SaaS to web publishing, gaming, media streaming and beyond.

Server Density would enable users to monitor their websites and servers in the cloud or on-premises from a single console and API to “easily” diagnose problems, maintain uptime and maximize server performance. The Server Density service will be integrated and offered as part of the StackPath platform in the very near future.

Moving forward, the Server Density team in London will serve as the core of StackPath monitoring service team and London will become StackPath’s European headquarters.

“Server Density’s HumanOps is a brilliant and long overdue resource for cloud workers and companies,” said Lance Crosby, founder, chairman and CEO of StackPath.

“We’re thrilled to have Server Density become part of our company. It’s a perfect fit,” said Lance Crosby, founder, chairman, and CEO of StackPath, who previously sold SoftLayer to IBM for $2 billion. “StackPath has the highest commitment to providing our customers frictionless services, complete visibility into their solutions, and building strong relationships with the open source community and the industry at large. Server Density has followed the same commitments as it built exceptional technologies that are second to none and grew operations at cloud scale.”

300TB Per Month

The Server Density monitoring agent is installed on millions of servers, collecting more than 12-billion metrics each day. The service has more than 100 official integrations with other solutions and platforms, processes more than 300TB of data per month and has availability probes in more than 28 different geographies. Its 1,000+ customers across 75 different countries span all sizes and industries, such as and including the UK’s National Health Service (NHS), eCommerce company Firebox, and online game platform Stormancer.

“We created Server Density out of the frustration that monitoring tools were either too expensive, too complex, or both,” said David Mytton, co-founder, and CEO of Server Density. “It’s gratifying to see how well our tools have been received, not only by customers but by developers and companies that have built on the code that we’ve open sourced. My team and I are excited to bring Server Density into the StackPath platform and accelerate even more evolutionary ways to leverage these technologies.”

HumanOps

In addition to its monitoring service, in 2016 Server Density created HumanOps, a community that gets people talking about the human aspects of running infrastructure. Companies such as Spotify, PagerDuty, Yelp and Facebook have contributed to sharing ideas and best practices for life on call, dealing with technical debt, fatigue and stress at events around the world, including the UK, US, France, Germany, Poland and more.

“HumanOps is a brilliant and long overdue resource for cloud workers and companies. This industry is evolving faster than any before it, requiring operations of unprecedented scale and solutions at unbelievable speed,” added Mr. Crosby. “It takes its toll on people – humans don’t have a 100% uptime SLA. We’re looking forward to doing even more with HumanOps as part of StackPath.”

In December 2015, Server Density raised $1.5 million in seed funding led by SP Ventures. They previously had raised €50k from Seedcamp and funding from angel investors Christoph Janz, Dick Williams, Qamar Aziz, and others. Financial details of the transaction are not being disclosed.

Cloudflare

cloudflareCloudflare, a global content delivery network (CDN) provider delivering Internet performance and security solution to its customers, has announced record network growth in the first quarter of 2018.

Cloudflare added 32 new cities, growing its network to 151 Points-of-Presence (PoPs) globally. Cloudflare now protects more than 8 million domains, websites, APIs, mobile applications, and anything connected to the Internet.

The global CDN company now has more than 625 employees, up from 400 just over a year ago. The company plans to continue to grow its engineering, sales, marketing, and support teams across its offices in San Francisco, Austin, Champaign, IL, London, New York, Washington D.C., and Singapore.

New Cloudflare Products

“At Cloudflare’s core is its network, which we’ve built to be flexible, efficient, and able to perform any task in any given location,” said Matthew Prince, co-founder and CEO of Cloudflare. “In this last quarter, we grew our network at record pace, bringing our network closer to everyone on earth. This means that we’re able to roll out products at a global scale for users everywhere.”

This announcement caps off a strong quarter for Cloudflare. The company announced three major new products in the quarter, including Cloudflare Access, a solution that would make accessing internal enterprise applications “fast and easy”; Cloudflare Workers, a “better, faster” way for developers to deploy and execute their code directly at the edge of Cloudflare’s global network; and the Cloudflare Mobile SDK, a free solution that would enable any mobile app developer to understand network performance and metrics.

Collaboration with IBM

Cloudflare also announced a collaboration with IBM – to extend security and performance from the cloud to the network edge. Through the collaboration, IBM has launched Cloud Internet Services – a one-stop shop for Cloudflare’s security and performance capabilities designed to protect enterprise public-facing web content and applications.

Now Cloudflare’s solutions can be deployed in IBM’s customers’ environments, including public, private, hybrid cloud, or on-premise. Additionally, IBM is now an authorized reseller of Cloudflare’s suite of security and performance edge services.

DE-CIX

Internet exchange operator DE-CIX has deployed Infinera Cloud Xpress 2 to more easily address soaring demand for interconnection services in “rapidly growing” markets including New York City, Frankfurt, and Dallas.

As an Internet exchange operator, DE-CIX allows service providers, content delivery networks (CDNs) and digital businesses to exchange Internet traffic between their networks. DE-CIX provides interconnection services and runs a range of carrier- and data center-neutral Internet exchanges globally. The Internet Exchange operator serves over 1,300 carriers, Internet service providers and content networks from more than 100 countries in various metro markets in Europe, the Middle East, India and North America.

The Infinera Cloud Xpress Family delivers “high-performance” data center interconnect solutions to cloud service providers, Internet content providers, Internet exchange service providers, enterprise network operators and other large-scale data center operators.

DE-CIX selected Infinera’s Cloud Xpress 2 solution for the combination of “capacity and simplicity in a compact, easy-to-install optical networking platform.” The Cloud Xpress 2 supports simple point-and-click provisioning, delivering 1.2 terabits per second of capacity up to 130 kilometers without requiring any external equipment. Infinera Instant Bandwidth would allow DE-CIX to activate and pay for additional capacity in minutes, reducing the initial cost of deployment while remaining responsive to customer capacity demands.

Instant Bandwidth

“DE-CIX is experiencing tremendous and unpredictable customer demand for interconnection services in major markets across the globe,” said Daniel Melzer, CTO of DE-CIX. “Our customers request instant activation of high-capacity Internet exchange services, and Cloud Xpress 2 with Instant Bandwidth enables us to deliver that to our customers. Cloud Xpress 2 is easy to install and is performing better than advertised for our data center interconnection requirements.”

Infinera’s Cloud Xpress 2 solution was implemented by network specialist Axians Networks & Solutions, which is a longtime partner of Infinera and has been involved in other projects for DE-CIX.

“With Internet traffic booming, driven by growth in cloud-based services, neutral interconnection services from DE-CIX are the glue connecting the cloud ecosystem,” said Nick Walden, Senior Vice President EMEA, Infinera. “We are delighted to work with DE-CIX to rapidly meet the needs of their customers.”

Open Edge Cloud Provider Qwilt to Scale Streaming Content Delivery for PTCL Subscribers Across Pakistan

Open Edge Cloud Provider Qwilt to Scale Streaming Content Delivery for PTCL Subscribers Across Pakistan
Qwilt

Qwilt, a provider of ‘Open Edge Cloud’ that supports applications such as Open Caching, 4K Live Streaming, AR, VR, Self- Driving Cars and Internet of Things (IoT), has announced that PTCL – one of the largest mobile and broadband telecommunications and Internet Services Providers (ISPs) in Pakistan, has chosen Qwilt’s open caching solution for content delivery for its OTT customers and for improving Quality of Experience (QoE) for its subscribers.

By deploying Qwilt’s content delivery and open caching solution, PTCL is looking to scale its network in response to the significant growth of streaming video services in Pakistan.

“PTCL’s internet services are designed for users to help them experience unmatched performance, reliability, and affordability,” said Saad Muzaffar Waraich, Chief Technology and Information Officer, PTCL. “Our OTT streaming services have been growing at a rapid pace. As we expect more dramatic growth in the coming years, we have decided to expand our existing CDN and go closer to the customer and I believe Qwilt’s content delivery solution can potentially provide the required foundation we need. Thanks to Qwilt, we have successfully created an efficient, intelligent and resilient network with content delivery architecture that can scale quickly to meet our needs. For PTCL, the business outcomes are outstanding.”

Streaming Video, CDN

By analyzing OTT video traffic in real-time, Qwilt’s open cache solution, deployed deep in ISP networks, can cache and deliver popular video content locally, close to subscribers optimizing streaming for both network utilization and quality of experience. The result would be a comprehensive and open architecture that can manage OTT, VOD and live streaming video in operator networks. This new open architecture is the foundation which would enable network scaling to support the future of online video streaming.

“The extraordinary growth of online video streaming has prompted internet service providers to embrace an open architecture to scale their networks and deliver a high-quality experience to their customers,” said Mark Fisher, Vice President of Marketing and Business Development for Qwilt. He said, Qwilt’s open caching is the open architecture solution that allows operators to scale their networks for content delivery. “We are excited to work with PTCL to extend the reach of our content delivery and open caching solution to meet surging demand for online video streaming in Pakistan,” added Mr. Fisher.

Apache Traffic Control

The announcement follows the news that Qwilt launched its enhanced Open Edge Service Provider CDN – an application within its line of Open Edge Cloud solutions. Qwilt’s Open Edge CDN, with an augmented suite of APIs, extends the company’s “expertise” in edge computing, open caching and web-scale content delivery with an “innovative”, cloud-based service provider CDN offering built on the Apache Traffic Control open source project. This combination of cloud-based CDN operations and edge delivery would result in two unique benefits to service providers: web-scale architecture and low-latency, high-quality content delivery from the network edge.
