Data Hosting Becomes Pillar Attraction for Irish Foreign Direct Investment

In recent years, a growing number of hyperscale organizations and small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) have been establishing presence in Ireland with significant investment of digital assets. Leveraging the power of the 5 Ps of digital assets hosting: Policy, People, Pedigree, Pipes, and Power, Ireland provides investors with the optimal hosting landscape for companies of all sizes across a wide range of industries, offering a secure, reliable, affordable, and effective digital assets hosting ecosystem. As a result, regional investment in the data industry continues to climb each year with steady growth quarter after quarter.

As part of its mission to generate awareness about the Irish data hosting industry, Host in Ireland recently released the report, “Ireland’s Data Hosting Industry 2018 Q2 Update,” providing information regarding recent financial investments as well as demonstrating the sustainability of the data center industry sector. Created in collaboration with Bitpower, the research study reports that more than more than €1 billion of new projects within the data industry have been announced throughout the course of the past three months – in spite of major setbacks.

Since Apple’s decision not to progress with an €850 million data center investment in Athenry, County Galway, Ireland, many industry stakeholders were concerned regarding the region’s ability to attract future investment. Fortunately, as demonstrated in the 2018 Q2 Update report, Ireland’s data hosting industry has continued to thrive. According to the report, 10 new data halls were announced between April and June 2018 and more than €1 billion will be spent in the construction and operation of the facilities, with an initial €500 million being spent over the next three years. In addition, findings show that data centers in Ireland have employed 5,700 people to full-time positions while simultaneously generating an astounding €1.6 billion in direct economic benefits since 2010.

“Ireland’s contribution to the global data center industry continues to grow with demand increasing for Irish companies, skills and expertise to lead projects across the U.S., Europe and Asia cementing our position as a global industry player,” explains Garry Connolly, Founder and CEO, Host in Ireland.  “As the Ireland Data Hosting 2018 Q2 report shows, Ireland remains attractive as a country at the forefront of an industry that is building modern digital infrastructure, and data hosting has evolved to become one of the pillars for attracting foreign direct investment into the country.”
