Raritan Unveils SmartSensors for Accurate Insights on Data Center Environmental Health

Raritan, a brand of Legrand – global specialist in electrical and digital building infrastructures with reported sales of $6.2 billion in 2017, has introduced new monitoring sensors to provide data center operators an accurate picture of environments at the rack, aisle, and facility level, and of potential risks.

Raritan provides intelligent rack PDUs, KVM switches, and other data center infrastructure monitoring and management solutions. The company’s new SmartSensors can monitor a cabinet’s temperature, humidity, airflow, and air pressure – as well as detect water leaks, vibrations, and unauthorized openings of cabinet doors.

With compute loads and deployments of double-digit kW data center cabinets on the rise, accurate monitoring of environmental dynamics would be necessary according to Raritan to provide safe conditions for servers to operate. Raritan’s new environmental sensors would provide high metering accuracy at +/- 0.5 °C for temperature sensors and +/-2.5% for relative humidity sensors.

“By using Raritan’s SmartSensors, data center managers can accurately monitor the exact input and output temperature, humidity, and airflow for every single cabinet in order to fine-tune cooling and humidity requirements and to optimize efficiency,” said Paul Mott, Global Technical Product Manager at Raritan. “Generating data at the cabinet level allows for better analysis and opportunity to optimize operations and reduce energy costs.”

DCIM

Raritan’s SmartSensors come in different configurations such as a combined temperature and humidity sensor, to make it easy to measure the cold and hot aisles of a data center environment and position the sensors top, middle, and bottom in the cabinet, as recommended by ASHRAE.

Raritan also offers SmartSensors that detect water leaks and vibrations. For security, contact closure sensors are available to monitor data center cabinet door openings/closings.

“Like the proverbial miner’s canary, Raritan’s SmartSensors provide early warning alerts to potential problems, such as hot spots, that could jeopardize the performance and life of IT assets,” added Mr. Mott.

The collected sensor data helps to reveal trends over time. For additional insight, information gathered by sensors can be monitored and analyzed by DCIM (Data Center Infrastructure Management) software for tracking trends and generating reports. Users, for example, can on a dashboard compare the data from sensors to the environmental envelope of a psychrometric chart to ensure that adequate cooling is where it needs to be.

To sum up, benefits of SmartSensor would include:

  • Save on cooling by confidently raising data center temperatures
  • Check airflow and air pressure to and from racks to prevent hot spots and bypass recirculation
  • Make strategic decisions on cooling design and containment
  • Set thresholds and alerts to monitor on-site and remote facilities
  • Improve data center uptime by receiving alerts for any fault conditions
