Last week I wrote about bizarre domain registrations by AARP and other entities. They registered domains related to cryptocurrency, NFTs and metaverse.

Add to that list Pfizer (NYSE: PFE), which registered a couple of dozen domains this week. The domains include Pfizer brands attached to meta,

I mean, what happens at MetaverseComirnaty.com, which is one of the domains Pfizer registered? Comirnaty is the name for Pfizer’s Covid-19 vaccine. I’m picturing a metaverse where vaccinated people have to run away from anti-vaxxers infected with Covid-19 who aren’t wearing masks.

Clearly, Pfizer doesn’t plan to offer a Comirnaty metaverse, Paxlovid crypto, or Ibrance NFTs. These domain registrations are defensive, to keep them out of the hands of other people.

But why? These registrations are futile. Suppose I want to trick people into joining a Comirnaty Metaverse (as if there’s a draw for that). In that case, I can use the domains comirnaty-metaverse .com or comirnatymetaverse .net, which Pfizer didn’t register.

It’s true that people beat Pfizer to the punch and registered PfizerMeta .com and PfizerMetaverse .com. But they aren’t doing anything bad with them, and if they did, Pfizer could easily obtain them using the UDRP.
