We have all read the news by now, Elon Musk has acquired Twitter Inc for a whopping $46 Billion USD…As part of that acquisition, Elon Musk has also acquired the IP portfolio related to Twitter Inc and part of that is 2,982 domain names from what I can see using our Whois Reverse Tool courtesy of our partner WhoisXMLApi.com

The portfolio that Twitter Inc owns is a real mixed bag of domain names, from an obvious array of brand protection domain names through to others such as, 1800Camera.com,  CityLifeStyles.com, Niche.co and Disc.mobi

I wrote about the portfolio and the history of Twitter back in 2015 on this earlier post at that time they only owned around 1,200 domain names however that has grown by over 100% in the past 6 years as you shall see from the below.

Did you know Twitter.com wasn’t the original spelling of Twitter, it was actually Twttr as Twitter.com was already registered back in the year 2000, 6 years ahead of Twitter Inc launching in 2006! Twitter Inc subsequently paid $7,5000 USD to acquire the matching dot Twitter.com Biz Stone shared the story at Domain Fest in 2012 and was covered by Domain Name Wire.

Biz Stone discusses the naming of his company.

Today at DOMAINfest in Santa Monica, Twitter co-founder Biz Stone talked about how they named the company and bought the domain for $7,500.

Stone and his co-founders wanted a name that showed “urgency”. They came up with Jitter, but thought that sounded negative.

One of his partners was paging through a dictionary and found Twitter. Since Stone’s wife worked with animals, he immediately liked the name and knew its connotation.

Since Twitter.com was taken, the company started with Twttr.com.

When Twitter started to take off they contacted the owner of Twitter.com, who was a bird enthusiast.

“We offered him $7500 or something and he was like ‘holy crap, payday!’”

Stone said, in his defense for offering what now seems like a small amount, they had no idea how big it was going to get. At the time he said $7,500 was a lot of money for them.
